Outdated manuals pose MRI safety risks for patients with medical implants - Health Imaging

Incomplete or inaccurate safety information related to electronic implants can put patients at serious risk during MRI exams. New research suggests that such a lack of proper safety information may be common. Experts from Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, recently detailed their organization’s pre-scan safety protocols in place for MRI exams. After reviewing three years of data from their clinic, the team discovered that issues with data integrity—relating to items such as hearing assistance ...

MRI-based prostate cancer risk calculators prone to underprediction

New research published in JAMA Network Open shows that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based risk calculators can predict prostate cancer risk among adults in Europe and North America with some accuracy, but remain limited when applied to advanced serum biomarker cohorts. The researchers indicated that MRI-based models have the potential to augment or replace traditional tools for predicting prostate cancer risk. However, few studies have compared the performance of existing MRI-based risk tools in different screening pathways or countries. ...

Imaging Features and Management of High-Risk Lesions on Contrast-Enhanced Dynamic Breast MRI | AJR

High-Risk Lesion Frequency ; The studies in our review showed varying results for the frequency of all high-risk lesions taken as a group. At the lower end of the spectrum, studies with both frequency and upgrade rates reported that 4% (1/27), 5% (2/38), and 8.5% (4/47) of all biopsied lesions were high-risk lesions (Table 1). At the upper end of the spectrum, high-risk lesions were reported as occurring in 21% (4/19 and 18/85) and 19% (31/161) of all cases (Table 1). Of the studies in our analy...

What Is a Breast MRI? | Breast Cancer Screening | American Cancer Society

When is breast MRI used? ; Breast MRI might be used in different situations. To screen for breast cancer: For certain women at high risk for breast cancer, a screening breast MRI is recommended along with a yearly mammogram . MRI is not recommended as a screening test by itself, because it can miss some cancers that a mammogram would find. Although MRI can find some cancers not seen on a mammogram, it’s also more likely to find things that turn out not to be cancer (called a false positive). T...
