Lifelong Greenwich Village resident Phil Mortillaro is no longer keeping his artwork under lock and key. ; In October, the owner of Greenwich Locksmiths decorated his tiny store’s facade with intricate patterns made from 10,000 keys. ; “I wanted to leave something with New York,” Mortillaro, 60, said. “There’s no real art going on in the Village anymore. I thought this would be nice.” ; The project took two years of welding keys of all shapes, sizes and vintage onto panels. The undertaking was so big, Mortillaro had to buy keys from salvagers at $1.25 a pound. The result is a brass canvas of spiraling patterns inspired by Vincent Van Gogh‘s masterpiece “Starry Night.”
